There has been no question at all about how impressive and consistent Max Verstappen has been this season. So much so that he may soon break the all-time podium record in F1 history.

Over the course of the season, Verstappen’s effective performances on the field have led him to reach more podium places, and he is now in a straightforward shootout for the title with Lewis Hamilton with only 2 races left.

What is this podium record?

Currently, the record for most podium finishes in a single F1 season is shared between the legendary Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton, who all managed 17. No rider has ever broken this record, but Max Verstappen is very close. And with 16 podium finishes so far and two races left in this dramatic season, he could well achieve F1 history.

Max’s unfortunate events

Although Verstappen has had a phenomenal season, he has had more than his fair share of unfortunate incidents, and without these he may have already broken the record he would very much like to keep.

Specifically, events at three races this season have affected Verstappen’s chances for the title, with individual errors and Lady Luck’s whims playing a role.

One of three took place at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where Verstappen seemed to take the race and with it a Red Bull 1-2, when his car suddenly got a puncture, which saw him go into a wall, which cost him an important victory and another podium finish.

Verstappen was also involved in the controversial moment in the British Grand Prix, where he had the now infamous collision with Hamilton, which led to the whole saga of the rules having to be clarified by stewards. Either way, a DNF was the end result, and yet another podium finish slipped out of his grasp.

Finally, we witnessed the chaotic scenes in Hungary, which left Verstappen with ‘half a car’ due to the reckless driving of Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas. The injury meant he could only limp home in ninth place.

What can stop Verstappen?

The only thing that could now prevent Verstappen from breaking that record would probably be one or more of these recurring unfortunate events. His form so far this season has been unique, and with F1 glory and legacy within reach, we can expect him to push hard for the title and podium record in the last two races.

There are rumors that Verstappen could stand in line for a grid penalty due to a new engine that Red Bull debuts, this would of course set him back in terms of the race grid, but it could benefit Red Bull team as it would mean they could use a high engine mode for the remaining two races. We await the decision on that.

An exciting end to the season awaits, which may well be at stake.
