How to turn off these “allow site notifications”? pop-ups in all browsers

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides and tips on how to get the most out of your gadgets, apps and other things.

There is virtually no need to allow websites to send you messages, and there is certainly no need for your web browser to ask if that would be okay. If you have never found any need for these, I would like to show you how to fix it once and for all, no matter what browser you use.

Google Chrome (desktop)

  • Click the three-dot button in the upper-right corner of the browser and select Settings.
  • Go to ‘Privacy & Security’, then click Website settings. Alternatively, you can simply type ‘messages’ in the ‘Search Options’ search box on this page.
  • Under Permissions, look for ‘Messages’ and click on it.
  • Under Default Behavior, select Do not allow sites to send messages.
