Barcelona president Joan Laporta has claimed his club could beat Bayern Munich in their final match in the Champions League group stage to potentially win the qualifier into the knockout phase of the competition. The group stage match will be played on December 8 in the Allianz Arena.
Barcelona have been subjected to a disturbing campaign so far as they have struggled in national and European competitions. Blaugrana were forced to make a change of leadership earlier this month after Ronald Koeman’s overwhelming start to the season finally forced them to hit the trigger. Barcelona icon Xavi Hernandez has taken over the reins at Camp Nou and has worked to turn the club’s fortunes over during the campaign. The 41-year-old won his first match at the club when they claimed derby honor against Espanyol, but he was unable to manage the Catalan club’s fortunes in the Champions League after a goalless draw against Benfica on Tuesday.
Their next task in Europe is to face Bayern Munich in a high-stakes match, where they must secure the victory to ensure they qualify for the quarter-finals, no matter what happens in Benfica’s meeting with Dynamo Kyiv. Blaugrana would need Benfica to play a draw or lose their match against Dynamo Kyiv if they do not claim victory at the Allianz Arena. Barcelona president Laporta believes Xavi’s appointment will be the source of extra motivation as they hope to secure the qualification.
“Beating Bayern is something that can be achieved.” A miracle is going to happen, I am convinced we will win. Xavi is very motivated and very strong. I hope all goes well for us, I think Xavi’s arrival at the moment has created some respect from our opponents. They know we can do it again, Laporta tells AS.
