Barnes & Noble named eight books as their finalists for Book of the Year in October. The third annual “Book of the Year” award is given to a book by bookstores working across the company’s stores, and they have announced this year’s winner: The lyrics: 1956 to the present (set of two volumes) by Paul McCartney.
“The lyrics are an extraordinary book. They are amazingly beautiful and a masterpiece in book design,” said Barnes & Noble CEO James Daunt. “Through exploring his songs with the poet Paul Muldoon, Paul McCartney has created a fascinating insight into his life and creative genius. No wonder the bookstores at Barnes & Noble have hailed this magnificent and deeply original book. “
Through the lens of 154 songs across all phases of his career, the collection shows McCartney’s art and life in a way never seen before. It is an insight into who he is as a person and his creative process over the last 65 years. Readers who love the Beatles would like to download this book, as well as anyone with an interest in music history or pop culture since the 1960s.
“I’m very honored to receive this recognition. My team and I are extremely proud of The Lyrics and it means so much to us that you all like it as much as we do,” Paul McCartney told Barnes & Noble’s officials.
The “Book of the Year” nomination, launched in 2019, is a chance for those working with books and readers to highlight this year’s favorites, who may or may not get the same honors elsewhere. The first winner of the “Book of the Year” honor was Charlie Mackesys The boy, the mole, the fox and the horse, which was an otherwise little known title. The book launched its way to the top of the bestseller list where it has been since, and it has sold over 400,000 copies and Barnes & Noble alone.
World of Wonders by Aimee Nezhukumatathil was the 2020 winner of the award, a huge win for both the book and its small press, Milkweed.
“We are ecstatic and extremely honored that The Lyrics has been selected as the Barnes & Noble Book of the Year of 2021. It is a magical match by a legendary songwriter who has cherished the written word all his life, and a great bookstore , dedicated to serving America’s thriving book culture, ”said Robert Weil, Editor-in-Chief and Publishing Director of Liveright Publishing.
This year, in addition to naming lyrics as Book of the Year, Barnes & Noble staff also chose to honor a book like Speculative Fiction Book of the Year. The credit goes to TJ Klune’s Under the whispering door.
“This year we also nominate a speculative fiction book to celebrate the massive bookstore and customer enthusiasm for the category and especially this year for TJ Klunes Under the whispering door, ”Said Shannon Devito, director of books, Barnes & Noble. Under the Whispering Door, which has been passionately championed by our booksellers since its release in September, Under the Whispering Door is a charming, big-hearted book with a little comfort and a lot of hope, making it the book to be read this year. We are in a wonderful position to honor them both. ”
Although both winners this year are by white men, the list of finalists offers a much wider range of excellent, bookseller-approved including books across genres and formats.
