A deafblind woman from Stretford, Trafford, Greater Manchester, has been nominated for an award recognizing the challenges she has overcome during the pandemic and her willingness to remain active and learn new skills.
Janet Grant, 57, who has Usher Syndrome and is deafblind, was nominated by the National Disability Organization, Sense, for the Person of the Year award at its annual Sense Awards, and the winners will be announced on November 25th.
Janet, who was very active before the pandemic and was stuck in her local leisure center, but when the shutdown began, she could not participate in all of her favorite activities at the gym, such as spinning and swimming.
Despite being locked up in her apartment for several months at a time, Janet was determined to find other activities to keep her busy and active. This included online activities provided by Sense Active, such as drumming and pounding, Tai Chi, spinning and online training classes. Janet has also learned Spanish and Spanish sign language, just as she has learned about Jamaican cuisine and enjoyed cooking various dishes.
Janet said: “I am thrilled to have been nominated for the ‘Person Of The Year’ award. My deafblindness and complex communication needs have taught me patience, determination and most of all perseverance. I would be very happy if my achievements could inspire others to follow their dreams. “

The Sense Awards recognize the outstanding achievements of people with complex disabilities, as well as the staff, caregivers, family members, volunteers and fundraisers who support them.
