The city’s Toronto employee killed in the shooting in Regent Park remembered as a deeply caring community member

A Toronto man who was killed in a shooting over the weekend in Regent Park is remembered as a “valuable member of the Toronto Public Service.”

Twenty-seven-year-old Thane Murray, an employee of the city of Toronto, was shot dead in the early hours of Saturday night when four suspects opened fire just before 9pm in the streets of Oak and Sumach in Toronto.

Three other people were injured and the four suspects remain at large.

“Thane worked in recreation programs at several recreational facilities in the eastern end of the city with Citys Parks, Forestry & Recreation division. “Thane was a reputable member of the Toronto Public Service and a much-loved member of the community who will be deeply missed,” the city said in a statement on Monday.

Toronto Mayor John Tory also offered condolences to Murray’s family and friends on Monday.

“My thoughts go to the family, friends and colleagues of Thane Murray. We know he touched many lives through his work on recreational facilities in the eastern end of the city, and his death has shocked so many in our [parks and recreation] division, ”Tory tweeted.

Toronto City Councilman Kristyn Wong-Tam described Murray as one who “deeply cared about his family, [friends], community and work. “

“With heavy hearts, we mourn the sudden death of Thane Murray, a well-known youth worker in the community and an employee of Toronto City in the Regent Park Community Center,” Wong-Tam wrote.

“He was a valuable member of the Toronto Public Service and will be missed by many who knew and loved him.”

Wong-Tam highlighted the neighborhood where the incident took place, stating that “if these shootings took place in Rosedale, no mental health / grief counseling and programs to deal with the roots of the violence would be spared.”

“But it happened in Regent Park, in Alexander Park and Lawrence Heights where [the] The majority of the families are poor and racialized, ”said Wong-Tam.
