Former left-wing candidate was ousted from the party over charges of sexual assault in Toronto

TORONTO – A former Toronto Liberal candidate who was thrown out of the party a few days before the election after an allegation of sexual assault was brought to light is expected to have won his ride.

CTV News has projected Kevin Vuong as the winner for Spadina-Fort York late Monday night.

The riding was too close to ringing last night, after long lineups, many polling stations kept open after 9:30 p.m., when polls officially closed in Ontario.

Vuong was asked by the Liberal Party to stop his campaign on Friday after the Toronto Star reported that he had been accused of sexual assault in 2019. The charge was later withdrawn.

Vuong has not responded to repeated requests for comment from CTV News Toronto, but told the Toronto Star that he denies the allegations.

The following day, the Liberal Party issued a statement saying Vuong would not run under their banner, and if elected, he would not be a member of the assembly. It is likely that he will sit as an independent instead, although it has not yet been determined.

When this was decided, it was too late to change its affiliation with the ballots in Spadina-Fort York.

Monday night, before the polls closed, Vuong’s Twitter page still indicated he was a liberal candidate.

The Liberals won the riding in Spadina-Fort York by a large margin in 2019.
