Carrusel Deportivo, via Sport, have reported that the LaLiga champions were warned about the prospect of the sensational move in the last month of the window.
Super agent Jorge Mendes, Ronaldo’s representative, regularly does business with Atletico and is believed to have pushed in an attempt to mediate the deal.
However, negotiations would have proved difficult, with Juventus initially reluctant to let Ronaldo leave, while Atletico would have struggled to pay his salary.
Diego Simeone is said to have rejected the move due to concerns over a fan setback
Atletico are LaLiga holders and Ronaldo would have strengthened their defense for the title
In fact, the potential switch collapsed when the club rejected it due to the veteran’s past success at fierce city rivals Real Madrid, the report adds.
After being told they were to kickstart the negotiations before August 15, Atletico were reluctant to seal the battle, fearing a backlash from their own supporters.
Eventually, manager Diego Simeone turned his attention to a return to Antoine Griezmann, a deal made possible only by Saul Niguez, who came to Chelsea.
Ronaldo left it late to officially confirm to Juventus that he would leave the Torino side and began an apparent bidding war between United and Manchester City.
Ronaldo’s adventurous return to United could have been ruined if Atletico moved after him
At first it seemed that City were the favorite favorites to sign him, but they later withdrew from the hunt, insisting they were never seriously interested.
That left the door open for United to move in and bring Ronaldo back, 12 years after he left Real Madrid in a then world record move.
