HOBOKEN, NJ – After unannounced fireworks filled the skies over the Hudson River Sunday night, residents of New Jersey and New York City took to Twitter to guess who had set them off. Some pointed incorrectly at the Hoboken Italian Festival, but the organizers had canceled their show this year out of respect for the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
Several said the high booms were in bad taste a day after the gloomy day.
Several others had a more likely theory: They were linked to the MTV Video Music Awards, just like last year.
Another theory was that the fireworks were from a party on the Hoboken waterfront. A couple apparently got engaged there Sunday.
Several Twitter commentators said the surprise boom was unwanted for another reason.
Once again able (or trying) to prove its relevance in the Tiktok age, the MTV show started at 8pm
